Out there's a land that time don't command
Wanna be the first to arrive No time for ponderin' why I'm a-wanderin' Nowhere the buses lay To the ends of the earth would you follow me? There's a world that was meant for our eyes to see To the ends of the earth would you follow me? If you won't I must say my goodbyes to thee Link |
Grayson Meadows had a lot of reasons to be excited for Y17, among them was their Y15 foal crop hitting the tracks. While technically their first crop had hit the track in Y16, the class of Y18 consisted almost entirely of horses bred by Grayson Meadows, and that in itself was something to be proud of. This moment upcoming in a few short moments was another that Tanner Grayson found himself incredibly proud of, the final workout before his two year olds went off to run in maiden races, hopefully with better luck than the Y13 crop had had.
The first onto the track was none other than Classy, a tall bay filly with four socks and a big white blaze. Looking at her, you wouldn't recognize her as a Flash Limits baby, she was a twig, spider legged and she had the body of a fish. It wasn't just her scrawny look that caught the public's eye, it was her love of the track, the look in her eye as she took off at breakneck speed and left those timing her fractions with their mouths gaping. Her name did suit the filly rather well, she was quite the Flash and she had an awful lot of Class.
Flash and Class was followed by the grumpy Insouciant. Built just like Tears of Blood and with a personality to match, this was a highly anticipated colt. In his final season Tears of Blood may not have been able to nose out Mastermind and Forbidden To Fly, however the rivalry was now to continue not on the track, but in the breeding shed. And the stallion was exceptionally portrayed by his grumpy first colt. Sure Insouciant didn't have the best of minds to work with, he wasn't exactly easy to train, but he was being expertly piloted by the very same man who lead his father to so many victories, none other than the brilliant Alex Shade. A Turf Triple Crown champions rider, winner of two Breeders' Cup races he was a man looking to build his already impressive resume and he may have just the chance to do it. The colt had a mind of his own, but when put to work, Insouciant could out run just about any horse on the track.
Lastly came a jet black colt, similar in look to All That Jazz, minus the tank-like build. Only slightly larger than Classy this colt was an unknown really. Out of a rather unproven mare, whose first foal hadn't made much of a showing at all. However his sire, Gamble on Peace had produced Toss Up who was preforming rather well. Sophie's Harmony was lightly raced and only a maiden winner, but showed promise. Hopefully the colt was able to follow up with a strong performance his two year old season.
The jockeys soon had their mounts warmed up and easily loaded into the starting gate. Tanner gazed upon the two year olds and held his breath, he wasn't known to get too terribly attatched to any horse, but these horses were his babies and he found himself rather nervous everytime they ran.
The gates burst and Classy shot from them like a rocket her twig legs propelled her two lengths ahead of Life and Insouciant. Her long sweaping stride was effortless and she settled right in, her ears flopped all over, she clearly wasn't paying too much attention to Andrew but she was having quite a bit of fun. Insociant had his ears slicked to the back of his skull and had no problems getting a little rough with Life, who frantically tried to pull ahead of the aggressive colt.
Alex fought with Insociant a bit. The colt was known to be moody but this was far worse then his normal temper tantrum. He snatched the bit between his teeth and began to go after Classy who had a 3 length lead on the bunch.
"He really doesn't enjoy being told what to do." Tanner commented on the colts aggressive approuch.
Aaron was sitting next to Tanner with her hands gripping her scalp. Not exactly what you would want to see going into a first race, but the colts heart was at least admirable. "No, no he does not."
Life and Hadley sat back, easily running along behind their opponets. They were nearing the final two furlongs and Hadley gave Life a kiss and his head. He didn't have to be told twice. Life burst from the clouds after Insociant and Classy.
The three were across the track noses and whiskers seperated them as they all came to the finish.
"Well that was interesting." Tanner smiled at Aaron.
"We're still working on some of the kinks obviously," She commented.
"I think they're ready."

I'm Gonna Be
Jacque Cousteau and Hadley Grayson
Leviticus and Jessie Coppermen
Leviticus and Jessie Coppermen
After the mornings more dramatic events it was a relief to everyone to see the next pair hit the track. The worst they would have to deal with was Levi being stubborn. There wouldn't be any ear pinning or biting, or refusal to slow down. Just a nice, easy going final workout between two of the stables sweet hearts.
Jacque Cousteau, the horse who thought he was a dog. No that wasn't an exaggeration, the horse played fetch. He'd always been a sweetheart which was typical of Union Jaque foals but he was far more unique then any of the other foals she'd had. He was a rich bay with a big blaze and bird spots freckled his chest. It was the reason why he caught so many peoples eyes while he was out on the track. He was unusual not only in mannerism but also in color.
Then there was the firecracker chestnut Leviticus. She was a favorite of stable hand Sam's, which was unusual, as he really didn't get too attached to any of Grayson Meadows horses. He was relatively picky about who he liked and didn't, and well, he seemed to really take a liking to Levi. By breeding she wasn't really anything special, the only thing unique about her was the shape of her blaze. Of course that was all based off of looks and her papers. Sam saw something in her no one else did, and he spoiled her rotten because of it.
The chestnut daughter of Instant Success and Silver Secret let out a squeal of joy as Jessie let her extend herself into a slow canter. She framed herself up and jogged along. There was one thing for sure, if she didn't make it as a race horse she'd make a nice hunter, her strides were gorgeous and effortless. She'd always come by it naturally too, she never had to be taught. She was a very correct horse and that made Steve optimistic about her future.
Jacque lolled along, happily jogging under Hadley. He'd never met such an optimistic animal. Jacque was never angry at anyone, they could do anything and he'd still love everyone. He was an absolute puppy. It was the strangest thing, Steve had been around horses all his life and he'd never encountered anything even close to Jacque. When they broke him to be ridden he just sat there, they didn't have to do anything. He just did was was asked of him and took it all in stride. He was so chill with everything it was mind boggling.
They had the pair warmed up and they loaded into the gate with zero issues and their break was flawless. To say Levi broke a step slow would be a compliment, she practically walked out of the starting gate. Steve wasn't concerned at all, this was usual behavior for this particular filly, and her rallies were breathtaking. She would never be a filly who won by huge margins, she was more a noses and whiskers kind of winner. While it wasn't as impressive, it definitely was thrilling.
Jacque rolled out of the starting gate though, he was three lengths ahead of Levi at this point, his ears were flopping in the wind and his tongue was sticking out to the side. The colt didn't look menacing at all, he looked cute, it was part of what made him so much fun to watch. His stride was long and sweeping, it gave off the appearance that he was moving a lot slower then he actually was.
They ran into the final furlong of their work and Levi exploded from the clouds to challenge Jacque. The colt had heart though, and he ran right with the filly who bore down hard on him, his ears still flopped in the wind but his eyes were more determined now. Levi on the other hand had her ears slicked back and would prick one once in awhile to listen to Jessie. She swapped her leads and hit another gear which was just enough to get up for a narrow victory of a nose over the plucky colt.

Don't Stop Me Now
Passionist and Andrew Martin
Gladiator and Alex Shade
Gladiator and Alex Shade
Andrew clung onto Al's neck for dear life as the two year old prince reared up for the umpteenth time that day. Andrew had been excited for the colts final work before he headed off to go terrorize the juvenile turf distance division. He hadn't ridden anything this temperamental for a very long time. He knew Tanner had hoped that by breeding their favorite black feisty mare to Hail to Prince would offset the mare's temperament and just make the colt stubborn. Fun fact: It didn't work. He leaped straight into the air and let out a splitting squeal. Jet black, long legged, thin bodied, but he had muscle on top of muscle, the colt did in fact look like the spitting image of an awkard Passion Heart.
"You know Steve there really is no shame in holding him back until his three year old season to start him." Tanner said watching the colt buck and fight Andrew every step of the way to the starting gate.
"No, but I'm afraid if we hold him back any longer he'll explode. Just wait you'll see, his mom may have been a late bloomer but he definetly is not." Steve replyed a smile upon his face.
Not twenty yards away from Andrew and Al was yet another beast. A purchase from the Y15 sale, Gladiator. By no means was the horse a blue blood, but he looked the sort. He was a two year old with the body of a four year old. Built like a tank and he had the temper of a weanling. The horse had muscles in his eyebrows, he looked downright menicing. Everything pissed the horse off. To be honest he was downright dangerous, you never knew what he was going to do, and he really had no way of telling you when he was going to blow up. He just did. He wasn't a horse he was a monster.
"Remind me again why you decided it was a good idea to put these two together in one workout." Tanner asked Aaron and Steve who watched their trainees nervously.
"It probably wasn't a good idea." Steve shrugged, "it's too late to change it now."
"But this is Grayson Meadows when do we ever make good decisions?" Aaron added.
Maximus flug his front end into the air and Alex grabbed onto the colts neck for dear-life and caught him before he could take off. He eased him into a trot but the grey son of Memorials Blaze wasn't too content with that and decided a gallop was a much better pace, Alex quickly pulled his head around and stopped that before it actually became a problem. The colt was smart as a whip there was no way he didn't know what was going on though. And the longer they waited the worse he would get.
Andrew had finished warming Al up and nodded back at Alex. He let Al start off at a slow jog and Alex let Maximus go. The grey colt leapt into action flying past Al like he was standing still. Of course over five furlongs the grey could sprint the whole way around and Al would never catch him, and technically Alex wasn't supposed to let him sprint the whole way around the track, but once the colt got to running he had about zero control over what happened next. Of course Al also had Passion Heart's brain in him. Which meant he didn't like to lose and he didn't appreciate Maximus's attitude in the slightest so he took off at a dead sprint after him.
"They're going way to fast." Steve chuckled.
"What else did you expect?" Aaron said.
Al came up along side of Maxiumus, something the colt wasn't used to, whenever he'd worked with other horses he always led the whole way around and no one could touch him. Today, that was not the case, but he didn't like it. He pinned his ears and pressed on faster. Al also didn't like falling further behind his foe and picked up the pace as well. Soon Al found himself head in head with Maximus.
Steve snickered watching Aaron and Tanner bite their lips anxiously as both colts raced around the track at breakneck speed with their ear's slicked to the back of their skulls. Andrew and Alex both had them in tight holds to keep them from over exerting themselves but it wasn't helping much. They rounded into the final furlong and Alex glanced over at Andrew, the two smirked at each other as they let their mounts have their heads.
"All hell is going to break loose." Aaron said nervously.
Maximus took control, grabbing the bit between his teeth and running his heart out. Al however had a heart that equaled Maximus's and was equally as stubborn and he kept stride with the smaller gray colt. They crossed the finish with just inches separating them. It didn't really matter who won, it mattered that the two put on a dazzling display of what was to be their future careers. They were good, how good? Well only time would tell, but they definitely had the heart and grit to be great.
Andrew and Alex attempted to regain control of the colts after the wire and struggled immensely. Gladiator reached out with his teeth to take a chunck out of Passionist and Al retaliated by nearly kicking Maximus. The outriders raced after the colts while Jessie and Hadley waited patiently with Jacque Cousteau and Leviticus.
"Well. We're never sticking those two on the track at the same time again." Tanner laughed.

Everybody Wants To Rule The World
The Dark Knight and Jessie Coppermen
Impassioned Blood and Alex Shade
Impassioned Blood and Alex Shade
Next out on the tack came Grayson Meadows' blue bloods of their Y17 crop. When they'd chosen to breed these two they expected something amazing, and what they got was pretty darn close. Tanner was especially excited to have lines form Touch Up in his stable it wasn't often you could get your hands on them so when Blue Cross Estates was re homing horses he didn't want to let The Dark Knight slip through his grasp again.
The colt was massive though, just as his father before him and Tanner expected him to reach at least 17 hands if not more. His appearance was so honest and regal, what you saw when you looked at The Dark Knight is was he was. A class act. Smart, clever, and mature. He was among one of the most respectful horses Tanner Grayson had ever seen. More or less, he was Immortal Flight but his athletic ability was far above that of his father, and that was perhaps what excited Tanner the most. They had an unproven sire paired with a proven line and the result was something great. He loved the colts work ethic too, he always brought his A game to every work and he was immensely interested to see how he would handle running with Hope.
Hope was on the opposite end of the spectrum. Crabby, irritable, immature, sassy, you name it she was it. Her pure hatred of people was pretty visible, aside form Sam she would really rather have nothing to do with anyone. Her preferred life was one of solitude. It wasn't that she was unhappy, she was simply more mareish then most of the horses at Grayson Meadows. However most of that irritated and pissy attitude translated well into her running, she was more then happy to blow off steam by demolishing her workmates perhaps if she was really feeling it she'd take a chunk out of one of them. She was more then happy to ditch Alex, which she'd done a few times, one of those events landed him a concussion too. Tanner never understood why Alex was so willing to get up on horses that would willingly kill him but he was one of the best at handling them.
The two broke from the gate effortlessly and Tanner watched in awe. Hope was the daughter of one of the best mares in the country, Blood Of The Angel, who'd produced many successful sprinters, and an impressive miler, Hellfire. Her sire was the sire of a Triple Crown winner, the expectations for Impassioned Blood were clearly through the roof, but just watching the filly run solidified Tanner's thoughts on her. They had to be true. It was rare to find such a balanced runner but she wasted no movement, they were all so precise. She'd been blessed with a huge stride, speed and stamina. He wouldn't be surprised at all if she turned out to be a jack of all trades and be able to run with the sprinters as well as the milers.
The Dark Knight ran strongly alongside hope. He towered above her and ran along easily, his ears were pricked straight up and anyone who was watching could tell the colt was having the time of his life. Hope on the other hand had her ears slicked to the back of her skill, clearly irritated with Little Fella. She pushed against the bit, asking for Alex to give her more of her head which he did but not much, but it was enough for her to get a slight advantage on the taller colt. She lengthened her stride and swapped leads.
Little Fella kept pace with her though, and soon the two were sprinting to the finish. There was no clear winner but Hope did reach out to take a chunk out of Little Fella at the end there.
